Hospital Grade Weighted Blankets

Weighted blankets may seem to be the latest product for sensory therapy or anxiety treatments, but they’ve actually been used in hospitals and clinics for decades.  The Cooley-Dickinson Psychiatric Ward in Northampton, Maine often welcomes new patients with a waited blanket when they are admitted.  The staff has noticed that when weighted blankets are present, the use of restraints is less likely needed with that patient.  The calming properties that the blankets offer not only soothe the patient but also the staff members; no one likes to see another person restrained against their will.  The use of weighted blankets in psychiatric facilities and hospitals is becoming increasingly popular and has been referred to as blanket therapy.

The Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare facility in St. Paul, Minnesota frequently uses weighted blankets on children with a range of conditions from anxiety to cerebral palsy.  The occupational therapy department allows families to try out the weighted blankets in their facility before recommending the family to purchase one on their own.  They do not work for everyone, so being able to try them out can save the family hundreds of dollars.

The blankets used in these facilities are typically not the colorful printed fleece designs that you are familiar with. patient wearing hospital grade weighted blanket in bed Medical and hospital grade styles are available for these facilities so they can be used by multiple patients without being laundered in between.  These weighted blankets are made from a wipe-able material that is liquid-resistant and has antimicrobial properties.  The blankets usually have an extra layer of stitching or binding agent at the seems so that the blankets cannot be opened by the patient.  Some manufacturers even make a duvet cover for the medical grade weighted blanket.

Where Hospital Grade Weighted Blankets are Used

Weighted blankets are used in just about every environment.  Wherever you can imagine experiencing stress or anxiety, is where a weighted blanket should be kept on hand.  Life is stressful to begin with, but when you add a mental disorder involving you or a loved one on top of your everyday stresses, you just need that calming, grounding feeling of a hug close by.   Weighted blankets are often used in these facilities:
